Sunday March 11th looks set to be a busy day for college hockey. Four men’s, women’s and mixed teams have made it through two rounds each to reach the Hockey Cuppers semi finals set to take place on 11th March.
For the men, Downing will take on St Catherine’s I whilst Selwyn face Jesus. Both Downing and St Catharine’s played a convincing quarter final round with both teams scoring double their opponents: Downing scored 8 to Fitzwilliam/Trinity’s 3 and Emmanuel could only manage 1 against St Catharine’s. Moreover, Downing and St Catharine’s both finished the Michaelmas league with twelve points, more than any other team. This semi-final could therefore prove a competitive match. Thanks to Clare forfeiting their quarter-final match, Selwyn had an easier ride to the semi finals. Jesus I have done well in the league this year and play Selwyn in the semi final. They could end Selwyn’s journey to the final.
Trinity/Fitz women played a great quarter final to reach their semi final winning 16-0 against Downing. They face the only Michaelmas B League team to make the semi-finals, Clare/Queen’s; C/Q will have to play a strong game to reach the final. A forfeited game by Peterhouse/Magdalene in the quarter finals allowed St Catharine’s women a relaxed route to the semi final. They will play a strong John’s/Newnham side who only lost one game in the Michaelmas league.
St Catharine’s make it a hat trick by also reaching the mixed semi final. They will play Jesus in what will likely be a close game. Trinity/Fitzwilliam mixed team play Downing in the second semi final after another high scoring win in the quarter final against Queen’s (T/F 7-1 Queen’s).
Good luck to those playing!
