Meet the Ospreys Committee!

In News by Abigail ThellussonLeave a Comment

The Ospreys is the home of Cambridge sportswomen; established to promote female athletes, the society does a wide range  of work in order to support the athletic development of individuals and University teams. To be a member, you have to play for Cambridge in a Varsity competition, meaning that the group comprises of the most dedicated representatives from a wide range of sports. This summer, a new committee was voted in – Bluebird has found out a bit about them, discovering their sporting background, their aspirations for the Ospreys, and what VK flavour they would incarnate …

Favourite sporting moment from history : I have a few… Nadia Comaneci becoming the first gymnast ever to receive a perfect score (10.0, Montreal Olympic games 1976)or Johnny Wilkinson’s winning drop goal in the world cup rugby final in 2003 or Charlotte Dujardin riding Blueberry (official name Valegro) literally in any competition – a totally unique and dazzling partnership!

What would your wrestling nickname be ? Jack Russell. Small but feisty and probably intensely irritating after a while!

Which sporting legends would come to your dinner party? Rafael Nadal, Jonah Lomu, William Fox-Pitt, Lindsey Vonn, Johnny and Angel Collinson and Zara Phillips

Why should women at Cambridge do sport?  Good fitness for the housework? In all seriousness though, women’s sports have been such a neglected aspect in women’s education for so long in both schools and universities. Even now we still see women’s sport sidelined in terms of sponsorship and recognition. Encouraging more women to play sport at Cambridge is crucial in helping to attain equality between men’s and women’s sports here. Moreover, sport is a fantastic way to let off stress and steam, (or even cure a hangover!), all of which affect Cambridge students.
