Last Wednesday the Blues played a tough game against Nottingham Trent’s first team, making several comebacks to end the game with a 33-31 lead, extending their winning streak to four games.
The first half got off to a poor start with Trent playing a very physical game and gaining a six goal lead, but intense defensive work and strong, sharp passes through the centre this brought the score back to 8-8 at the end of the first quarter. Trent then pushed back in the next quarter to bring the half time score to 19-14, despite hard work from Frances Lee-Barber (GA), Zoë Starbuck (GS), Sarah Godlee (WA) and Becky Haggie (C) to bring the ball into our attacking third.
In the second half the Blues really came into their own, meeting Trent’s physicality with resilient. Amazing defensive pressure from Chloe Merrell (WD), Chloe Cunningham (GD) and Rosanna Hurst (GK) resulted in several interceptions and turnovers, as well as inaccurate passes from Trent. Despite a final surge from Trent in the last few minutes, the Blues held onto the lead and ended the game on a hard-fought 33-31 score.
Captain Chloe Merrell earned a well-deserved player-of-the-match for her excellent work in both defence and attack, especially the many interceptions in the last half.
