As well as being the fun-filled party that Varsity Trip is renowned for, there is also a competitive edge, and not just for the University Blues teams. On 6th December 2017, the intercollegiate skiing cuppers’ competition was held in Tignes, France.
Teams of four from Cambridge colleges race against each other, with a parallel competition held between the Oxford colleges. This year, an extremely strong Girton team starring 2014 Winter Olympian Luke Steyn, Antoine Magré and Barnaby van Straaten (all from the men’s Blues team), and Andrea Seaton (winner of the women’s varsity individual competition), unsurprisingly won the Cambridge cuppers’ competition.
The last race of the day was the grand final, pitting the winners of Cambridge cuppers’ against the winners Oxford’s edition. This saw Girton face off against St Hilda’s College, and once again Girton’s pedigree shone through as they successfully repelled the challenge to secure the bragging rights for Cambridge.
