It’s the festive time of the year again! And this December, the Blue Bird will be running its very own Advent Calendar of Sport! Each day we will bring you a cheeky/exciting/interesting/fun fact about Cambridge Sport. Enjoy!

DAY 18

The 1800s saw the start of Oxford and Cambridge’s sporting rivalry. First off the mark was cricket with their first Varsity match in 1827, followed by rowing in 1829  and then the likes of rugby, athletics and hockey soon after. Needless to say that these sports have benefited from their history. Blues status, alumni funding and professional coaches come with many years of members working to improve their clubs.

The most recent of sports to have started their Varsity match tradition is Cambridge University Diving Team having had its first Varsity (though not officially recognised by Oxford) last year.
